HOW TO USE THE TILES
Information for customers considering tiling their bathrooms, kitchens and fireplaces with Nina's reproduction tiles.

THE TILES
For this project I have chosen materials and techniques to make reproduction tiles affordable. Screen printed images are fired on to white 150mmx150mm tiles. I use tiles manufactured in Britain by Pilkingtons and Candy. Both brands are available from larger tile retailers. The image can be fired on to coloured tiles and works well on cream/beige colours giving a softer tone on the Daisy and the Kelmscott Manor fireplace tiles.

FIREPLACE TILES
For fireplace tiles I use a thicker standard 150mmx150mm tile. The thickness of the tile enables it to cool more slowly in order to prevent it cracking when used on working fireplaces. Customers wanting replacement tiles for Victorian fireplaces need 6"x 6" tiles which can also be supplied. For this purpose I use Craven Dunnill Jackfield Ltd These tiles are hand made in part of the Ironbridge Museums, a World Heritage Site. Tiles are made here as they would have been during the industrial revolution using original machinery and glaze recipes. For me it's the way the print melts into the glaze on this tile that makes it very special.

HOW TO ORDER TILES FOR BATHROOMS AND KITCHENS
A sample tile can be purchased in the shop. When you are ready to order your tiles send a message, email or phone. We aim to post orders within 28 days. For customers requiring the Craven Dunnill Jackfield Ltd tiles the timescales are longer, up to six weeks, because the tiles are handmade to order.

PURCHASING TILES
Once you have chosen your tiles you'll need to work out how many you need to purchase. Probably the easiest method is to measure the height of the wall and calculate how many of your chosen tile size will be needed to fit the area for tiling. Count a half or part of a tile as whole one. Do the same for the wall width. Multiply the number required for the height by the number for the width and this will give you the total number for the wall. Repeat the process on the other walls. Make adjustments to allow for doors and windows, and for the inclusion of any decorated tiles. When you have a final total for the whole room add on a further 10%. There are two reasons for this, the first being that inevitably some breakages will occur, and the second that if, in the future, tiles are damaged you will have replacements available.

CALCULATING WALL TILE
An example of calculating tile requirement follows, given a wall measuring 2.7 metres long by 2.2 metres high; to be tiled using 15cm x 15cm mixed plain and patterned tiles but no borders.

Divide wall height by tile height. 220cm - 15cm = 14.67, say 15. Divide wall length by tile width. 270cm - 15cm = 18 tiles required: 15 x 18 = 270

Add 10% for breakages = 297 total. 15cm square tiles are usually packed in boxes of 43, so 297 - 43 = 6.9, say 7 boxes. To use a mix of tiles purchase, for example, 5 boxes of plain and 2 patterned. Matching borders if needed are 7.5cm high by 15cm wide and are available usually in packs of 10 or 12. You will further require wall tile adhesive and grout. Coverage is indicated on the packs.

Plenty of advice is available online for those who want to install the tiles themselves. The Tile Association also lists reputable tilers .
